The holiday rush has ended. It’s cold and below freezing outside. The hype of winter is now over. What to do, what to do? I love January but homeschooling in January is my least favorite. We live in a cold climate, even though I try to get them outside each day sometimes it’s below freezing and we are all miserable. With all of that being said, today I am going to share with you some of my January Homeschool Activities to do with your children. Some are for outside while others only require blankets and cuddles!

Winter Scavenger Hunt
This is one of my favorite things to do with my kids all year round, but especially in winter! Like I said it gets really cold where we live and sometimes we only last about 30 minutes outside. We also don’t have much of a backyard so I have had to get creative. My winter scavenger hunt always seems to be the perfect January homeschool activity when we need something new and different to do outside.
Make snowflakes
One of my favorite homeschool winter activities is to make paper snowflakes with my children. It’s such an easy, fun, and creative way to make a craft on those indoor winter days. You can use the template I have below or easily YouTube how to cut out your own snowflakes.
Winter Books
One of my favorite ways to warm up and spend time with my children is to cuddle up and read our favorite winter books. It’s so much fun and such a simple activity to do that sometimes gets overlooked. I have a whole separate blog post on what is in our January Morning Basket. Hot Chocolate and Board Games
Hot chocolate and board games are both musts in our house. So when we have been outside we make us some and hot chocolate and I love to bring out our favorite games to play while we sip on our hot chocolate. We love the classics like Candy Land and Uno but we also play learning games too. Money Bags is a favorite, too, which is perfect for money and counting. We also love Let’s Feed the Very Hungry Caterpillar Game which is perfect for counting and learning puzzles. Below is a list of our other favorite games we enjoy playing together!
Go on a winter walk
If it’s not below freezing, I love to take the children to our local nature preserve to walk and explore. I like to have my children comfortable with all the seasons and different types of weather. The preserve changes during each season and so it makes it seem so different. They now can see the pond frozen, what it looks like with no leaves and mountains of snow.
