Now that it is January we have full dove into our winter books. One of the books I will be reading with my 1st grader is The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson. We love this story so much. So, I decided to create The Gruffalo’s Child Unit Study. It was so much fun to create and my 1st grade was so excited to complete it. I would love to share with you my free The Gruffalo’s Child Unit Study.

Mini-Unit Packet
This mini-unit packet contains 9 pages, 5 for your child to complete. For our mini-units, we like to use notebooks for them. It makes it easier to keep everything together. It may be easier for you to just use it as a packet or create a folder. Use whatever works best for you and your child.
Vocabulary
Like I said above, I created this for my 1st-grader, so I only chose three words from the book that we can work on together. I shared my vocabulary list in the unit study along with a section for you to add your own vocabulary words too. Remember, every child is different and at different levels. Use how you see fit. The three words I chose for him was wood, snow, and child. I just get him to cut the words out and glue them to his notebook and rewrite the word. This helps in cutting skills, pasting, and word recognition.
Activities
In this The Gruffalo’s Child Unit Study, I have included 4 different activities to be completed. Use them however you see fit. We did one for each day, Monday through Thursday, along with reviewing his vocabulary. I only do a spelling test on Friday. For each activity, we go over that particular part of the story and have a discussion.
The Gruffalo’s Child
So, we started our mini-unit with reading The Gruffalo’s Child. We finished it by watching the short movie. This was so much fun having a story and movie to refer back to it. This also opened a discussion of how they were different.
