The weather is beginning to cool down, leaves are beginning to fall, and the mornings are much crisper now. It’s my favorite time of year, fall. I always feel so happy and giddy when Autumn arrives. My kids love it too because we decorate, go to the pumpkin patch, and watch tons of movies. It’s just an all-around fun and exciting time in our house. Today, I have gathered up 10 fun fall activities for kids! Above all, they are very simple activities that do not need much prepping and most of the items you probably already have at home, so it’s budget-friendly too! These fun fall activities will make lasting memories for you and your children. Enjoy!

Create a Fun Fall Journal
Firstly, we create a fall journal every year. I am a homeschool mama to two, so it’s a must-have in our classroom. Secondly, we use this journal for all of our different fall activities and observation of the new season. We just use cardboard notebooks and decorate the covers with pictures, stickers, and markers. You could easily create your own with paper and make your own booklet. In these notebooks, we do a lot of the following activities in them!
Leaf Shading
Leaf shading is one of my favorite fun fall activities I love to do! I think it’s so pretty to see the different leaves, shapes, and details that appear on the paper. My kids love searching for leaves and finally seeing their masterpieces at the end! We just use crayons and our journals for this activity. Take the leaf and place it under a piece of paper (tracing paper works best). Take a crayon and color the spot of paper that is on top of the leaf. Make sure to press hard enough so you can see the image of the leaf. This activity is such a beautiful experience!
Fall Scavenger Hunt
This is one way to get my kids outside and on an adventure. I have created this free printable. They go outside and try to find the list of items on their own in nature. They always love scavenger hunts. Sometimes I even give them the camera to take pictures of their treasures along the way.
Paint Pumpkins
We aren’t big pumpkin carvers here, I prefer to paint them. I have found the pumpkins last longer, it’s not as messy, and much safer than carving. My kids love painting them and love creating their own masterpieces. If you want to learn more about pumpkins you can also order my Pumpkin Unit Study here.
Fall Journal Prompts
Journal prompts are an activity I love incorporating in our homeschool. I have a list of free journal prompts here. I love seeing what answers my kids come up with or stories they create through these prompts. This is an easy and fun activity that can really bring a lot of discussions.
Read Fall Stories
One of my favorite things to do in the fall is to read stories. Books are a huge part of our lives and yes, we have many dedicated to different seasons. Here is a list of our favorite stories:
- Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak
- Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
- Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White
- Autumn in the Forest by Rusty Finch
- Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson
- We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger
- The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams
- Fall Mixed Up by Bob Raczka
- You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie by Natalie Mashall
- Because of an Acorn by Lola M. Schaefer
Go on a Leaf Hunt
To go with one of the stories listed about We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt you can easily include this to fun fall activities to do with your kids. Elizabeth at This Little Home of Mine has in detail how to have a great leaf hunt! You can check it out here.
Watch Movies
This is one of my favorite things to do with my kids. We love to cuddle up on the couch and watch our favorite Halloween movies. We pop some popcorn, get some chocolate, and just enjoy these slow evenings. Here is a list of our favorite movies:
- Hocus Pocus
- Halloweentown I & II
- Monster House
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
- Casper
- Spooky Buddies
Bake Fall Treats
When the weather starts getting cool I love to make Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Banana Bread from Chocolate Covered Katie. Her recipe is so delicious and other delicious treats. I love getting my kids involved in the kitchen. They are always excited to help me cook. Here are a few recipes to try this fall.
- Apple Crisp by Belle of the Kitchen
- Snickerdoodle Cookies by Lilluna
- Halloween Movie Mix by Our Messy Table
Create your own Fall Decorations
My kids love to do this. They get so creative with their decorations. I just pull out the construction paper and art supplies and they normally create so much. The pride in their faces are priceless along with their adorable decorations.
These simple fun fall activities for kids are sure to make memories. So, now that you have more ideas to do for fall, what is one activity you are most excited to do? Most importantly, remember to have fun and cherish these moments with your little ones! I hope you have a happy fall and stay peaceful.
