It is our third year of homeschooling and I can not believe it. I am so excited! I’m probably more excited than the children. For my 1st grader, he will mainly be focusing on his handwriting, math, reading, and spelling. The extracurricular subjects we do together with his brother. This year they wanted to focus on the ocean. I am still creating our unit for that. Here are our 1st-grade homeschool curriculum choices for 2020-2021.

Math

Once again we will be using Horizons Math Curriculum for 1st grade. I love this curriculum so much. We used it last year and I am so proud and amazed at how much both of the kids excelled in math. Math is not a strong subject in our house but this curriculum has changed that. I have a full review for Horizons Kindergarten Math here if you are more interested.

Even though this curriculum is very good and keeps my first grader intrigued I also supplement with flashcards, counters and Money Bags, a money counting game. This helps me understand where he is at in math.

For extra practice, I created my own 1st Grade Homeschool Math Worksheet Bundle! I created these worksheets to help boost his confidence on anything he wasn’t understanding or even just for him to do for fun! This 1st Grade Homeschool Math Worksheet Bundle contains over 50 different math worksheets for your 1st Grade learner. This bundle includes addition, subtraction, skip counting, telling time, even and odd numbers, tallying numbers, measuring with a ruler, greater than less than, and place values! You can purchase the bundle here for only $7!

Handwriting

For handwriting, we are using the Handwriting Practice Workbook. It goes over both uppercase and lowercase letters. They even have a picture to color for each lesson. We will probably use this about three times a week. It also contains sight words at the back of the book for extra practice.

Spelling

This year we are using two different books for spelling. My 1st grader is still learning to read. Our first book will be the second Explode the Code. I love these books for spelling so much. It really helps the student grasp reading.

Explode The Code Book 2

Our second spelling choice will be Evan-Moor Skill Sharpeners Spell & Write Grade K. We are using the kindergarten one because he is still learning to read. It is only 12 lessons so my goal is to move to grade 1 when we complete this book. I have compiled all the spelling words in this book here. I will show him this list each day to just go over and help him read.

Reading

This year I am incorporating Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. We will be working through 1 lesson each day to help him with his reading. *Update* This book helped us so much! I highly recommend it if your 1st grader is still learning to read. By lesson 30 he was able to recognize words so well! It breaks the reading down into short lessons that are not overwhelming. We just did it every day until we completed the book. Definitely, an awesome book!

This year we are still using Bob Books Set 1. We only used the first four books last year. I am hoping to be able to complete the set this year for my new reader. He loves the little stories and can easily read them as well.

Bob Books

I am also going to incorporate his favorite books we have around the house and create our own little mini-unit studies. Room on the Broom is a favorite in our house and I created this FREE mini-unit to incorporate with his reading. It’s the perfect book because of its rhymes.

Science

This year my 1st grader wanted to learn about the ocean. So, we are using Ocean Anatomy by Julia Rothman. It is a wonderful reference book and we supplement from this book with our other ocean books and crafts. We also watch The Magic School Bus and Octonauts on Netflix.

Here is a list of the ocean books we will be reading this year:

Calendar Work

This year we are still going to be using my daily and monthly calendars as well for my 1st grader. These really have helped him understand the different months, days of the weeks, and calendar. My Daily Calendars are for purchase here!

You can also purchase my monthly calendars here. You get 24 printable blank calendars. The first set is so they can write in the month and days of the week. The second set is for those that can’t quite write yet but can color them in.

This is our 1st Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices for this year. We are so excited. What are you using in your homeschool this year? Stay peaceful.

  1. Hello, I looked for The Magic School Bus and the Octonauts and I can’t find it whit that specific name. Can you please advice on which season is? and what is about it?
    Regards

    1. Hello, I just checked and both are still streaming on Netflix. You can also YouTube full episodes of both The Magic School Bus and The Octonauts. Both are very educational. The Magic School Bus is about a class and a teacher that go on many science adventures with their magic school bus. The Octonauts are little animals that live under the sea and explore the ocean.
