Morning Basket for Our Homeschool

How to create the perfect homeschool morning basket?

When I started homeschooling two years ago I was always trying to find easier ways to smooth out our mornings. At the time I was pregnant and homeschooling a 4th grader and a preschooler. So I started researching and came upon the Homeschool Morning Basket concept. This was a way to allow mornings to go much smoother and really get the boys more involved. It allows them to have a choice. We are always using it throughout the day. We just use what we feel like each day. Sometimes it’s one item or it’s three.

Books

Books are a favorite in our homeschool. There is unlimited possibilities in learning and stories. These are some of the books we have included in our morning basket

A Year Full of Stories
I love this book. It shows different holidays from all over the world and folklore stories go with it. We normally follow the calendar with this book

Folklore for our Morning Basket

The Book of Time Outs
I found this book in a Goodwill bin and it has been an interesting way to look at history. It tells brief stories of historical people who made mistakes. It’s a funny book that teaches a quick lesson as well.

History for our Morning Basket

The Night Sky
We do a little unschooling when it comes to history and science. This year the boys wanted to learn about space. I found this book on Amazon. It teaches so much about space from the planets to the constellations. It even comes with a star finder.

Space for our Morning Basket

Gratitude Journal
Every day we discuss what we are grateful for. I feel its important for my children to really look at the whole world and find the little things that bring great joy to their lives.

Who Was Books
These we read out loud together and the stories are so interesting. They really make history more fun. I normally allow them to pick someone they would love to learn about and it takes us about two to three weeks to read. It always leads to discussions.

Who Was Series

Hands On Activities

I like to keep a couple of hands on activities for my children to do during our morning basket. This changes it up and keeps our learning interesting.

Games
This is always my favorite to do with kids because it always brings laughter. Whether it’s telling how we feel about each other in Totem or not being able to find something in Eye Found It or just playing matching with a deck of cards we always have fun. It starts our day off well.

Games

Kinetic Sand, Paper, and Crayons
Because my children are so far apart these help my younger one stay with us much longer than just sitting still. I have found he actually listens to what I am reading or discussing if he is coloring or building with sand.

Creativity for Morning Basket

The Homeschool Morning Basket can be anything you want it to be. It’s a wonderful, exciting way to learn. It is simple and no curriculum is required. Click here to see what curriculum we are using for my kindergartener and 5th-grader. What’s in your homeschool morning basket?
